Neutering your cat
All clinics of De Dierenkliniek have a very extensive operating room well-equiped to neuter your male cat. Moreover, our veterinarians have ample surgical experience.
Your male cat can be neutered from the age of 5 months. When neutering a male cat, we remove the testicles under general anesthaesia. Neutering a male cat has many advantages, and a single disadvantage.
Advantages of neutering
- Unneutered males fight considerably more
- Unneutered males tend to urinate; by doing so, they mark spots both outside and inside the house with their urine
- Urine from unneutered male cats smells very strong
Disadvantage of neutering
The metabolism of a neutered male cat changes, which can cause them to gain weight faster. This can be prevented by adjusting the cat’s diet. We can support you at any time with nutritional advice.
How does neutering work?
Before we begin surgery, the patient is thoroughly examined. During surgery, we monitor your pet closely. We use respirators, gas anesthaesia and monitoring equipment, with which we measure heart rhythm, blood oxygen and CO2 levels as standard. When necessary, we support your pet with infusion therapy. We do everything to make sure the surgery is as safe as possible.
There are a number of things you need to take into account when having your cat neutered. First of all, your cat must come fasted to the appointment. This means that he should not have any food for 12 hours prior to the treatment. Animals can vomit from the anesthaesia and if they have eaten, food can get stuck in their throats. You may always give your cat water though.
After surgery, your cat will be placed in a comfortable and warm place. The recovery area is adjacent to the operating room so we can keep a close eye on your cat while waking up. The veterinarian will call you in the meantime to tell you how the treatment went.
When your cat is fully awake, he may go home. You will receive a phone call from one of our nurses to schedule a moment to pick him up. You will receive an information letter about the aftercare at home.
