Mites or Mange in Guinea Pigs
What is mange in guinea pigs?
Skin problems are unfortunately quite common in guinea pigs. They are often caused by mites, also known as mange. In guinea pigs, the most common mite is Trixacarus caviae. These mites burrow deep into the skin, causing bald patches and crusts. The guinea pig suffers from severe itching and will scratch frequently.
How does a guinea pig get infected with mange?
Mite infection usually occurs through direct contact, but it can also happen indirectly, for example via a contaminated cage, bedding, or hay.
How is the diagnosis made?
To determine whether a guinea pig is indeed suffering from a mite infection, a skin scraping is taken. This sample is then examined under a microscope, as the mites are not visible to the naked eye.
How do you treat a guinea pig with mange?
Once a mite infection has been diagnosed, the guinea pig should be treated with a spot-on treatment containing selamectin. The pipette is applied to the neck, and the treatment is repeated after three weeks. In most cases, two treatments are sufficient to eliminate the mite infection, though occasionally a third treatment may be necessary.
It is also important to thoroughly clean and disinfect the cage, and to treat any other guinea pigs that may have been exposed. If a secondary skin infection has developed, for example from scratching, this can be treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication.
