Neutering of your guinea pig
When do we recommend neutering a guinea pig?
In some cases, it may be advisable to neuter your guinea pig. Neutering can help prevent aggression between cage mates and unwanted offspring. In male guinea pigs, also called boars, neutering involves the surgical removal of the testicles. This reduces sexual drive and renders your guinea pig infertile.
At what age can a guinea pig be neutered?
Your guinea pig can be neutered from the age of 4 months.
How long does a guinea pig remain fertile after neutering?
After neutering, a guinea pig is generally still fertile for about 5 to 6 weeks. It is therefore important to keep him separated from female guinea pigs, also called sows, during this period.
The neutering procedure
Your guinea pig does not need to fast before the neutering procedure. In fact, it is very important that they continue to eat. A guinea pig’s digestive system must keep moving, as it can be difficult to get it going again if it slows down. Even after the surgery, it is essential to get your guinea pig eating as soon as possible.
For the procedure, your guinea pig is placed under general anesthesia and receives a pain relief injection. To maintain their body temperature, they are placed on a heating mat. Once the surgery is completed, your guinea pig is given an injection to help them wake up quickly, minimizing the duration of the anesthesia. During the procedure, your guinea pig is constantly monitored.
After the surgery, your guinea pig is moved to the recovery area, where they are carefully observed as they wake up. They can only go home once they are sufficiently awake and their body temperature is stable.
Post-operative care after neutering
As soon as your guinea pig wakes up, we will call you to discuss how the surgery went and to schedule a pick-up time. It is important that your guinea pig stays warm, so keep them indoors and provide a cozy, warm spot to rest.
Avoid straw, wood shavings, or hay in their enclosure, as this can irritate the wound. Use a smooth, clean, and soft surface instead. A towel works well. Make sure your guinea pig continues to eat and drink. We will call you the day after the surgery to check on their progress.
