What does the ban mean?
From 1 January 2026, the Netherlands will implement a ban on keeping folded-ear and hairless cats. This means that these cats may no longer be kept. The aim of the ban is to improve animal welfare and prevent the breeding or sale of new cats with harmful physical traits.
State Secretary Jean Rummenie (LVVN) says:
“Animal welfare is my top priority. It is important that cats do not suffer unnecessarily because of their physical traits. This ban allows us to prevent such suffering.”
Why this ban?
Folded-ear and hairless cats often have serious health problems directly linked to their appearance:
- Folded-ear cats (for example, the Scottish Fold) have a genetic cartilage defect. This can lead to pain, stiff joints, limping, and in severe cases, paralysis.
- Hairless cats (for example, the Sphynx) have no coat, which makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. They are prone to skin problems, infections, and stress due to the absence of whiskers and tactile hairs. Their ears are also more vulnerable, increasing the risk of infections. Furthermore, their skin is sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk of skin cancer.
What does this mean for current owners?
If you already have a folded-ear or hairless cat, you do not need to give up your pet. However, a few rules apply:
- Your cat must be verifiably microchipped before 1 January 2026 to fall under the transitional scheme.
- From 1 January 2026, these cats may no longer participate in exhibitions or competitions, even if they are already microchipped.
- Have your cat regularly checked by a veterinarian and follow their advice to prevent suffering.
What happens in case of violation?
Cats born on or after 1 January 2026, or cats that are not microchipped, fall under the ban. Violations can result in an administrative fine of €1,500.
